SEO vs Google Ads: Which Should a Denver Small Business Start With?
Owners ask this constantly, and the honest answer depends on three things: how fast you need leads, how much cash you can commit monthly, and how competitive your category is in Denver.
Speed
Google Ads produces calls the day it launches. SEO takes two to four months before it produces anything meaningful and six-plus months to hit stride. If you need work booked next week, ads win and it is not close.
Cost shape
With ads you pay per click, forever. Denver clicks for trades run $8 to $30, and dental or legal terms go well past that. Stop paying and the phone stops that day.
SEO is a fixed monthly cost that compounds. Month one feels like nothing. Month nine usually costs less per lead than ads ever will, and the rankings keep working during the month you take off.
Control
Ads let you dial in the exact search, the exact city and the exact hours. SEO takes what Google gives you. If you only want emergency calls inside a fifteen-mile radius between 7am and 7pm, ads do that cleanly today.
Durability
SEO is an asset you own. A map pack position and a set of ranking pages keep producing after the invoice stops. Ads are rented traffic. Both are legitimate — just know which one you are buying.
How we actually advise people
If you need leads now and can commit at least $1,500 a month to spend plus management, start with ads and add SEO in month three once cash flow is steady.
If you have some flow already and are thinking about the next two years, start with SEO — it costs less and the compounding is real.
If your website is bad, fix that first regardless. Sending either traffic source to a site that doesn't convert is how people conclude 'marketing doesn't work'.
Running both
Once you can afford both, they help each other. Ads data shows you which searches actually convert, and those become your SEO content priorities. Meanwhile SEO gradually reduces how much you need to spend on the same terms.
